Informations about the city of Faenza

Click to enlargeFaenza is an Italian small town of the Emilie-Romagna area, whose closest big cities are Bologna and Ravenne. Faenza is a town of Roman origin, but it is the Renaissance which gives him its noble letters with the arrival of the earthenware which will make the reputation of the city in the whole world.

Click to enlargeSo as we said Faenza was initially Roman, it's the Renaissance which left the most traces in the city and Piazza della Libertà and Piazza del Popolo show still today, thanks to their buildings, the richness of this past. On Piazza del Popolo it is always possible to see the Palate of Podestat E del Municipio, which dates from the Middle Ages. First was restored at the beginning of the century, as for the second, it was transformed at the XVIIIe century, and was Palazzo Click to enlargedel Capitano del Popolo before becoming residence of the Manfredi Lords then, nowadays, town hall of Faenza. Piazza della Libertà, certainly the most animated city, will enable you to discover a beautiful whole of buildings and arcades called “Portico degli Orefici” which were built in 1610, the tower of the clock and a fountain with bronze of the XVIIe century, as well as the Cathedral St Pierre, built of 1474 to 1515. The latter is of Tuscan Renaissance style and the interior, with three naves separated by columns, would be inspired of the Basilica San Lorenzo of Florence.

Click to enlargeWhile walking you, you will discover several bels buildings, old palates, showing the richness of the city of the Renaissance at the time neo-classic. One of them is today a very interesting museum, the Milzetti Palate. This palate built of 1795 to 1802, is a ordering of the Count Nicola Milzetti to the architect Giuseppe Pistocchi and it is also a pure Click to enlargewonder concerning its neo-classic decoration carried out by artists such as Felice Giani, Antonio Trentanove or Francesco Ballantini Graziani. One says of him, that it is most beautiful of the area. The parts which you will be able to discover along your visit are: kitchen, living rooms, village hall, library, boudoir, room to be slept, bathroom. The visit Click to enlargestarts with the kitchens in basement and which contrasts obviously with the remainder of the rooms as soon as one reached the top of the monumental staircase which carries out us to it. The many stuccos are a wonder, the frescos inspired of antiquity and admirable style of Pompéï, and the attractive horns the eye. If the rooms which one visits all are not furnished, it should be recognized that the beauty of the palate lies in its decoration. The ceilings make you dizzy and the walls, show all the talent of these artists and their pupils, as for the big room of the festivals, also called “gallery of Achilles” it makes dream !    top of the page

Click to enlargeAnother museum, more modest but not less interesting and which is in a very beautiful building, is Pinacoteca which offers to the visitor a panorama on the artistic production of the XIIe century Faenza at the XIXe century. You will be able to see thus there works of Donatello, M.Palmezzano, D.Dossi or C.Cignani. To also note, the presence of temporary exhibitions.

For earthenware, we could not visit faience manufacture, unfortunately. They seem that they don't want to be made known more than that, strong of their success undoubtedly. Click to enlargeBut it is obviously possible to visit the museum of earthenware. To even go in a simple shop is rather unpleasant in the direction where as of the entry a panel indicates to you that you are in a store and not in a museum, then it is to you interdict of touching with anything, extremely practical when one is there to buy! It was the only wrong note of our stay with Faenza !

Click to enlargeBut all doesn't turn solely around earthenware in this charming city. Animations are numerous there, like Palio del Niballo, tournament between 5 knights of the districts of the city, which takes place in June, or the race of the 100kms the last weekend of May, between Florence and Faenza and which brings together the athletes of several countries. It should not be also forgotten that the city was a long time the seat of the stable of Formula 1 Minardi and that since 2006 it is Toro Rosso which elected residence with Faenza. It is not rare besides that a demonstration around the car takes place in the city.    top of the page
