Visit NOGENT LE ROTROU

Between Chartres and Le Mans, hidden with the hollow of its timbered hills, the town of Nogent Le Rotrou is pround to be the capital of the “Perche”.

If the city known its time of glory with the breeding of the horses “Percheron”, it makes today beautiful great strides thanks to tourism which develops to with it recently. It was time!

How one had been able to drop this city in the lapse of memory, whereas it is the cocoon of splendid historical richnesses, to the heart of a green nature.

The old city, extends from the edges of Huisne to the castle, it gathers in fact all the town center. A beautiful excursion is to be made on the basis of " the wood bridge " (which is not any more wood some since the second world war) by going up the street SAINT LAURENT, we arrive soon at height of the old abbey (today college) then a little higher at an inn of XVIème century, today restaurant . There, if you are courageous, to cross the street Gouverneur where we could before admiring beautiful hotels of the XVI, unfortunately destroyed by fire and to assemble the steps which lead to the castle (do not forget to hope them to amuse you!)

CHâTEAU ST JEAN

The Keep was built in XIème century by Sully, future minister of Henri IV. He did not benefit from it unfortunately a long time, the city being very catholic, from where its significant abbey, and Sully was Protestant. The cohabitation proved rather difficult then. The successive sales led several lords in the city and each one desired to arrange the castle with its taste, of which the current aspect of the castle.

At the interior we will immediately find on the right " the room of the guards " which from time to time lodges paintings of regional artists, on the left a beautiful kitchen and its imposing chimney. At the floor, you discover the pretty museum of the “Perche” with a small reconstitution of an interior “Percheron”, crockery and numbers various objects.

The Park makes it possible to see the interior of the keep and also leads you to the “oubliettes”.
We will be able to also benefit from a beautiful overall picture on the city.

By leaving the castle, to take the street in front of the exit and to go down to the church “Notre Dame”, making path, you will discover pretties streets, like the street of the “Chapitre” and a beautiful " Piéta ".

CHURCH NOTRE-DAME

Church of the town center, it contains a very beautiful crib out of wooden of XVIème century. At outside (entered by the street Sully), the tomb of the 1 ^erminister and his wife Rachel. If the tomb is outside the church, it is obviously because Sully was Protestant, as we explained higher.

Practically opposite “Notre Dame”, you will find the town hall and the tourist information, which will offer the occasion to you, to make beautiful ballades outside the city in order to better make known to you this beautiful area than is the “Perche”.
